The Tasha Jones Porter Scholarship was created to honor Tasha’s legacy of mentoring and growing others in support of the Guiding Light Mentoring’s mission. She was a passionate board member who truly believed in the potential of everyone and that support, advocacy, and mentoring can go a long way to unleashing the best out of everyone. This is a mantra she carried thru life impacting and changing lives one person at a time. It is therefore fitting that thru this scholarship her great work can continue in support of the students of Guiding Light Mentoring to have a chance to better their lives with a scholarship to help them reach their dreams and life goals.
Tasha understood at an early age what it takes to persevere over challenges as she was born with one ear and had a limited capacity to determine the direction of sounds. She grew up struggling to hear in noisy and crowed places and while others tried to define her potential in life, she moved forward in faith and reached high heights. He favorite verse that defined her and her life was “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phiippians 4:13). She grew up in Memphis, Tennessee where she attended school and attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire for High School. At Exeter, she acquired the intellectual skills to cultivate the a love of learning and lifelong commitment to helping others through her experiences around the Harness table, community service in Africa interning in Congress. After graduation, Tasha returned to Memphis where she eared her undergraduate degree from Rhodes College and met her husband, Jerry. After marriage, she moved to Cincinnati in Banking working as Branch manager at US Bank. With a love for learning and insatiable appetite for growing her self, she obtained and MBA at night from University of Cincinnati which led her to work at Procter & Gamble where she was promoted to the Senior Director of Finance P&G.
